Photography Residency Ends 😢 – Stephanie Mercedes Signing Off

Unfortunately, my time at the lovely Flower City Arts Center has come to an end. I could not be more grateful for all the friends I made, the skills I learned and the support that was given to my current project, “Luz del Día: Copyrighting the Light of Day.” I had no idea how big on impact this residency would have on my practice and life! Thank you to all the students who took my course, “How to Use Art as a Political Tool” and everyone at the center who helped me throughout my residency! I hope to return to the Art Center very soon.

I am returning to New York City for the Summer where I will continue to work on altering the 2,540 negatives that will compose my archive of the 1976-1983 Argentine Dictatorship. I am very grateful to be a recipient of the 2018 Light Works Grant, which will help me fund this project. I will be a Fellow at VisArts in Washington DC over the summer and just interviewed to be a Halcyon Fellow in Washington DC as well. I will be exhibiting “Luz del Día: Copyrighting the Light of Day” at OSF in October and at Light Works in August!

The above negative is two combined images: children touching protest papers (zoomed in) and a birds eye view of Rio de la Plata. Rio de la Plata is the body of water that connects Argentina and Uruguay. During the dictatorship many of those who disappeared were dropped into the river during the night. There were so many ‘death flights’ during the Junta that the sea level was said to have rose.

Thank you Flower City Arts Center! You will be missed greatly and I cannot wait till I can return to the lovely city of Rochester.
