Studio 678 is an after-school photography and writing program conducted by Flower City Arts Center. Free to students, the club is funded by donations and grants. Photographers from Flower City Arts Center provide instruction in partnership with local poets and volunteers in small groups of students.
Studio 678 puts a professional 35 mm film camera into the hands of middle school students and involves them in the entire creative process – from taking the pictures to making their own black & white prints in a darkroom to matting and framing their prints for exhibition. They also write poems or stories to accompany their images and create a collaborative book of their writing and photographs.
Using photography and writing as the tools, Studio 678 empowers youth to express their vision and voice, build life skills, connect with the community, apply school subjects in a practical way, utilize teamwork skills, and develop mentoring relationships with their lead teacher and community volunteers.
